“Oh my God, I feel incredible! I’m so free and light! How come I’m not feeling any more pain in my body? Where has it all gone? Hey, why does it seem like my surroundings are moving away from me? But I’m not scared! Why am I not scared? Where has my fear gone? Oh wow, I can’t find the fear anymore!”
Anita Moorjani, Dying to be Me
These are the thoughts moving through Anita Moorjani at the moment she collapses, organs shutting down at the end of her excruciating journey through cancer.
The Prelude to Transformation
Anita was born into an Indian family in Singapore where her father ran a lucrative family business. When she was two years old, the family moved to Hong Kong, so she grew up in a bustling, busy, cosmopolitan world.
As she grew older, Anita found herself continually frustrated by the restrictions her Indian culture placed upon her adventurous nature. Refusing an arranged marriage, she commences a career and meets her soul mate in Danny Moorjani.
Not long after her marriage to Danny, Anita’s friends and family begin to be diagnosed with cancer.
This news instilled a deep fear in me because both of them were close to my age. I began researching everything I could about cancer and its causes. Initially, I started doing this in the hope of helping, because I wanted to be there for Soni, to help her fight. But I found that the more I read about the disease, the more I was afraid of everything that could potentially cause it. I started to believe that everything created cancer—pesticides, microwaves, preservatives, genetically modified foods, sunshine, air pollution, plastic food containers, mobile phones, and so on. This progressed until eventually, I started to fear life itself.
Almost inevitably, she discovers a lump in her neck - and is diagnosed with cancer. By February 2006, her condition had deteriorated so severely that her organs were failing, and she slipped into a coma. It was during this critical juncture that Anita experienced something extraordinary that would forever alter her understanding of life and death.
Eventually her body shuts down completely. She is rushed to hospital and her Near Death Experience begins.
Crossing the Threshold
As Anita lies in a hospital bed, unresponsive, she feels her consciousness detach from her physical form. She described an immediate sense of liberation and immense clarity, free from the pain and suffering that had plagued her body. In this disembodied state, she was acutely aware of everything happening around her, both within the hospital room and beyond. She could perceive her distressed family and hears the conversation her husband was having with the doctor forty feet down the hallway, and the frantic efforts of the medical team, but she also transcended these immediate surroundings, entering a realm of profound tranquility and boundless love.
As I continued to plunge deeper into the other realm, expanding outward, becoming everyone and everything, I felt all my emotional attachments to my loved ones and my surroundings slowly fall away. What I can only describe as superb and glorious unconditional love surrounded me, wrapping me tight as I continued to let go. The term unconditional love really doesn’t do justice to the feeling, as these words have been overused to the point of having lost their intensity. But the physical battle I’d fought for so very long had finally released its strong hold on me, and I had a beautiful experience of freedom.”
The Encounter with Unconditional Love
In this expansive state, Anita encounters a sensation of unconditional love that permeates her being. She feels completely embraced by this love, which dissolves all fears and doubts. It was as though she had tapped into a universal source of compassion and understanding that transcended human experience. Anita described this feeling as one of absolute clarity and insight, where the interconnectedness of all life became apparent.
Insights and Revelations
During her near-death experience, Anita is not alone. She senses the presence of beings she recognises as deceased loved ones, including her father. These entities communicate with her, not through words, but through a direct, intuitive knowing. They impart crucial insights about her life, her illness, and her purpose.
I became aware of both my father and Soni communicating to me: Now that you know the truth of who you really are, go back and live your life fearlessly!
The Choice and the Return
Anita’s journey comes to a pivotal point. She is offered a choice. She can continue on into the spiritual worlds, or she can return to her earthly existence. Remarkably, her choice will change the outcome of her physical condition. If she continues on, then her body will simply give in to the cancer ravaging it. If, however, she decides to return to the body, then her cancer will be healed. She knows the doctors will not be able to find a trace of cancer inside her body in a few days.
“How can that be?” I was astounded by this revelation, and wanted to understand why.
It was then that I understood that my body is only a reflection of my internal state. If my inner self were aware of its greatness and connection with All-that-is, my body would soon reflect that and heal rapidly.
Anita’s final lesson is that she has a purpose in life. She doesn’t have to go in search of this purpose, it will unfold in front of her. All she needs to do is to be herself - without judgment or feeling that she was flawed. And at our core we, like the Being she was communicating with, are pure love.
Miraculous Healing
Anita returned to her physical body. Upon awakening from her coma, her recovery defied all medical expectations. Her body, previously ravaged by cancer, to the point of disintegration, began to heal at an astonishing rate. Within weeks, scans revealed no trace of the disease that had nearly claimed her life. Doctors were baffled, but Anita understood that her near-death experience had catalysed a profound transformation, not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally.
The Aftermath: A New Perspective on Life
On her recovery Anita began to communicate her experience to others through the Near Death Experience Research Foundation’s (NDERF) website, www.nderf.org. Her account attracts attention from oncologists and other doctors who are expert in the field. Their investigations reveal how miraculous Anita’s healing was. “Lady, you should be dead!” was one expert summation.
After such a profound experience it is no surprise that Anita’s outlook on life and hence her course of life underwent a complete transformation.
…because of my NDE, I went from an outside-in view of reality to an inside-out view. That is, I used to think that the external world was real and that I had to work within its confines. This is pretty much how most people think. With this view, I gave my power to the world outside, and external events had the ability to control me—my behaviour, moods, and thinking. Emotional reactions and feelings weren’t considered real because they weren’t tangible. They’re thought to be merely reactions to external events. In that model, I was a victim of circumstances rather than the creator of my life. Even illness was an external event that just “happened” to me randomly.
However, after my NDE, I began to see myself as a divine and integral part of the greater Whole. This includes everything in the entire universe, everything that has ever existed and ever will, and it’s all connected. I realised that I was at the centre of this universe, and knew that we all express from our perspective, as we’re each at the centre of this great cosmic web.
A series of “coincidences” unfold in her life. She talks to Wayne Dyer live on his radio show - and he arranges for her to publish her story.
Anita’s story begins in fear, and ends in triumph. Today she inspires others through her writing and speaking to groups around the world. She encourages others to refuse the judgments and definitions of others and to become who they truly are.
She is the embodiment of the truth that we all have the inner power and wisdom to overcome even life’s most adverse situations, as she’s the living proof of this possibility.
Excerpts from Anita Moorjani, Dying to Be Me, 2012, published by Hay House

Wow!!! What an amazing life journey. And what an amazing account of the shift in the sense of self from ‘outside in’ to ‘inside out’. I wonder, is a NDE a necessary condition for this change in perspective? I am thinking not … extreme pain comes to mind
I strongly suspect that the NDE is a “last resort “ of spirit ? There are so many ways to change consciousness into Realm-2 consciousness. See Wyse Art ?. It comes down to “pay attention!“…
Mario said that we didn’t have to do things the hard way – but most of us do. Yes, I guess extreme pain would make us “pay attention” too!
