...what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him little less than God,
and crown him with glory and honor.

Psalm 8

The Human Being - Realm 1

Since the middle of the nineteenth century, science (i.e. Western culture) has subscribed to the “biomedical” model of the human being. This is a view that the person is composed of various physical elements such as cells, neurons, muscles, bones and so on. These elements work quite independently of the mind and illnesses can be treated in much the same way as a mechanic fixes a car – through disassembling, repairing or replacing the physical elements.

This way of looking at the human being has been very successful in some respects. Certain illnesses and have been treated so comprehensively that diseases such as smallpox and malaria have almost vanished. It should be said, however, that even orthodox medical circles are finding the biomedical model very limiting. The onslaught of such conditions as diabetes, depression, cancers and life-style diseases indicate that our health is subject to influences beyond the physical elements that compose the body.

The traditional biomedical model cannot explain the function of the mind. Proponents tend to cling to the idea that mind and body are separate entities. The idea of the soul has been long banished and consigned to the dustbin of useless concepts.

Alongside the biomedical model, the “vibrational medicine” model has evolved. Vibrational medicine declares that human beings are made up of

energy fields. These energy fields are interconnected so that when one becomes unbalanced, it affects the whole of the person. The opposite holds as well: if the unbalanced energy field is rebalanced, the health of the person is re-established. Vibrational medicine relates well to many alternative therapies and traditional non-Western medicines. It must be said, however, that mainstream science denies the existence of such fields, and therefore views vibrational medicine as pseudoscience.
